Wood roofs can be beautiful.  Expect higher cost and more maintenance.  Treated wood shingles are another option.

Wood shingles may be pre-treated, or you may apply a surface preservative.  

Check manufacturer’s recommendations.

Fire retardant wood shingles are available.

But any kind of wood roofing will almost certainly get you a higher premium on your home owner’s insurance.
 

Engineered Roofing

Engineered roofing can give the good look of wood with much less maintenance.  It’s made of composite materials, one being recycled tires.

Engineered roofing can make for a very durable and attractive look. As with wood, be prepared for higher cost.
