Insulation (cont., p. 7)

House Wrap

House wrap is a rolled film which serves as a moisture barrier that retains breathability.

House wrap should be applied by your framing crew after walls are raised and sheathing is in place.

The wrap is secured primarily by the use of button-cap nails, but edges should be overlapped and taped.

House wrap is known by different trade names from a variety of manufacturers.

But regardless of manufacturer, all serve the same purpose.

The wrap is a high-density, polyethylene fiber which repels water drops while allowing the passage of water vapor.

That’s an important distinction.

That characteristic inhibits water vapor from collecting and possibly pooling in a wall cavity.

house wrapI see very few houses anymore that are built without house wrap.

The primary purpose of house wrap is as an inhibitor of the development of conditions that could lead to mold.

Your building code may not require the use of house wrap.

I strongly recommend it, however.  It’s been years since I’ve built a house without it.  The cost is modest and well worth it.
