House Plans (con't., p.2)

Design Your House Yourself

There’s nothing wrong with designing your own house and then hiring a professional to turn it into a working set of plans.

You don’t have to have training in house design to come up with a plan that works for you.

I know because I’ve done it myself.

And I even got some nice folks to buy the house from me.

One good way to have some fun with designing is to find a floor plan that comes close to being ideal for you, then use your creativity to make it ideal.

Move walls, expand one room, shrink another, add closets, doors, windows, anything you can think of.

Dream home to one man. Tough sell to another.

I do advise, however, to keep the overall look traditional.  You may want to sell your house someday and you’ll want to appeal to as many potential home buyers as you can.

Don’t design something odd that you would have trouble selling later.

You can still be creative, though.  That’s the part of building that I enjoy most ─ tweaking designs to make a good plan even better.

Any changes you make to an existing plan must be reviewed by a professional designer, however, to ensure that structural aspects remain intact.

House Design Software

House design software is a good way to create a professional look yourself.  With a little practice, it can become very easy to use.  Or get a few basic drafting tools and put your design on paper.  A professional designer or draftsman can turn it into working plans.
