Side Light
Windows which are built into a single door unit, placed on either or both sides of door.

 

Single-Hung Window
A window with only one section (sash) that is moveable up and down.

Site Plan
An illustration of a piece of property, which depicts lot boundaries and location of structures to be built on the property, which may include details of roads, driveways, landscaping, or anything that will be added to the property.  A site plan is generally required to obtain a building permit.

 

 

Site Prep
Excavating, grading, tree-cutting, rock removal, or any task that involves preparing land for building construction.

Slab
A type of house foundation, in which the floor (building surface) dimensions are formed by wood or block frame, poured full of ready-mix concrete, and finished to a smooth surface.

Soft Cost
All costs of building construction not related to tangible construction materials or fixtures and the labor cost to put them there.  Typical soft costs are expenses for surveys, plans, insurance, building permits, interest payments, utilities, etc.

Soil Test
See “compaction test.”

Soil Treatment
A chemical, anti-termite treatment of the ground of a building site.

Soldier
A brickwork technique, in which bricks are laid vertically as a decorative accent.
