Floor and Ceiling Joists

Joists can come as standard boards (shown above) known as the “2-by.”  This refers to the two inch horizontal thickness and the vertical measurement, such as 2x4, 2x6, and up through 2x16. 

 

Joists also come as a manufactured wood product known as the “I- Joist.”

The I-Joist is a more expensive option than the 2x.

This photo shows the I-Joist used for ceiling and second-floor support.



 

 

 

Another joist option is the manufactured truss, also known as the “open-web” or “flat-chord” joist.

This is the most expensive of the three.

These open-web trusses are used as ceiling joists and second-floor support.
