Framing Your House (cont. p. 8)

Joists and Trusses

The roof building alternative to pre-manufactured trusses is the conventional "stick-built" roof.

Stick-built roof.

The choice between using manufactured trusses versus a stick-built roof is one that should be made well in advance of beginning framing, and only after careful cost consideration.

Your framer might be willing to reduce his fee if you use trusses, as this will reduce his labor cost.

Either approach will give you a good, solid roof.  Trusses take time to build so you should get your order in early.

If you stick-build, I recommend placing the rafters 16" apart (also known as "o.c." or "on-center").

That is better than the sometimes used cost-saving measure of 24" spacing.

16" spacing gives better strength and is less likely to show imperfections in those long rafters.
