House Foundation (cont., pg. 8)

Basement Foundation

A basement foundation requires footings, a poured concrete floor, and walls of either concrete block or poured concrete.

If you’re building with poured concrete walls, you should be able to find one contractor who will handle everything:

  • Layout
  • Staking
  • Digging
  • Pouring of footings and walls.

If you’re building with concrete block walls, you will probably need a separate contractor for the block.

Be certain of local building codes if you want to use the basement for living space.

You must have a door that opens directly to the outside, or at least a window large enough to allow egress.

As with all foundations, structural integrity is vital ─ that starts with footings.   Walls require reinforcement.

Review your basement plan with the contractor to ensure all specifications are followed to the letter.

And don’t forget the waterproofing.
