Fiberglass and Steel Doors

Fiberglass and steel are the primary alternatives to wood used as entry doors.  They have become a common choice even in more expensive houses.

The top photo is a fiberglass door with a simulated, stained wood finish.  It’s hard to tell it’s not real wood, even up close ─ one of the reasons this less expensive alternative is so popular.

That’s painted fiberglass above left and steel on the right.  Fiberglass is cheaper than wood and steel is cheaper than fiberglass.  Both have a hollow core which is filled with foam insulation.  Even with full exposure to summer sun, both will remain cool on the inside.

Lately, I’ve been using fiberglass with a wood stain, like the one in the top photo.  It’s a few hundred dollars more than the steel door unit, but I like the look much better.
