Working with Building Inspectors

A Valuable Process In Your Building

Until a few years ago, in my county you could build a house without having to pass a governmental building inspection ─ as long as you built outside the jurisdiction of any of the various city building inspectors.

But that is no longer true.  And you almost certainly will be subject to conforming to applicable building codes as determined by your local inspector.

I face nine different inspections on each house I build.  That number may differ in your area.

You should be given a list of all required inspections when you purchase your building permit.

Building codes can be interpreted in different ways.  That is why some builders dread a visit from the building inspector.  But that’s no reason that you should.

The building inspector is your friend.  Building codes are there for a reason.  The inspector makes sure your house is in compliance.

Calm down, the inspector is doing you a favor.Plumbers, electricians, and others have to buy their own permits, and will make the call to request for an inspection at the appropriate time.

But in other cases, it will be your responsibility to alert the inspector’s office of the need for an inspection.

Be familiar with your inspection responsibilities in advance and be ready to make the call at the proper time.
