Brick (cont., pg. 3)

What You Need To Do

● Your Building Inspection Office may require a brick inspection, which is usually to determine if you’ve applied a sufficient number of brick ties in the right places, prior to laying brick.

Check to see if this is a required inspection before laying brick.  The brick ties must be there, regardless.

● Brick companies have field sales reps.  As soon as the house is framed, have a rep go to your job site.  He will estimate the amount of brick and mortar you’ll need and have it ready when the time comes.

● Brick masons need sand to mix their mortar.  Windows, doors, and garage doors require steel lintels (an L-shaped length of steel, above photo) to support the weight of the brick.

Your brick representative will figure the amount you need of all of these to include in the order.

● Upon completion of job, call your sales rep immediately for pick up and return of unused brick and mortar.

Brick is delivered in cubes of approximately 500.  Untouched cubes are returnable for credit.

● There will be a huge mess outside when the brick is finished.  Get it cleaned up as soon as possible so that flatwork and landscaping can follow.

You should be able to find a contractor who specializes in site clean up, using a small loader to handle the broken and extra brick.

● There are cleaning contractors who specialize in brick.  They scrape and pressure wash away mortar chunks and dirt.

Have this done as soon as possible after completion of job.  Some brick cleaners like to use an acid rinse to spray on the brick.  But some types of brick aren’t receptive to chemical cleaners, Check with your brick company before allowing anything more than plain water.

Your brick company should have a list of names of brick cleaning contractors.
